Abstract:

Since death is considered a part of life in Turks, it is of great importance to have a tomb that is respected for the soul of the deceased and represents immortality. Tombs and tombstones, which are one of the important elements of our tangible cultural heritage, provide information about the economic, social and cultural structure of the period in which they were made. In addition, they have the quality of historical documents in terms of reflecting the life, faith and art characteristics of the region. Niksar, one of the important settlements in Anatolia, is very rich in terms of Turkish-Islamic tombs and tombstones. Apart from the Melikgazi Cemetery, which is one of the oldest Turkish cemeteries in Anatolia in the district center, there are graves and tombstones belonging to the Ottoman Period in the villages connected to Niksar. In the village of Büyükyurt, which is 26 km away from Niksar, one of these villages, tombs with çanti technique have been identified. In this study, the Büyükyurt village cemetery of Niksar district was introduced by considering and an evaluation was made on wooden graves in the çanti technique, the example of which has not been known until now. In addition, it has been tried to determine the place of tombs with çanti technique within the Turkish-Islamic burial tradition. It is important to protect these tombs with çanti technique, which is a type of tomb that is not very common in Anatolia, and to transfer them to future generations.
