Abstract:

Dictionaries are among the most important works that carry the features of languages. The dictionary has a long history dating back to ancient times. In Turkish, Dîvânu Lugâti't-Türk, written by Kashgarlı Mahmut in the 11th century, is the first known dictionary. Dictionaries have been used since ancient times, and one or more multilingual dictionaries written at different times and with different features have survived until today. In this respect, Turkish has a rich dictionary heritage. The importance of dictionaries, which are an important source of research and study for both linguists and users, and the interest in these works is increasing day by day. This situation has paved the way for extensive researches, analyses and studies on dictionaries. Terms such as lexicography, lexicon science, lexicology and lexicographical are used to meet all kinds of publications, research, method determination, and dictionary writing activities. While lexicography analyses the structure and usage areas of dictionaries, it offers dictionary users the opportunity to examine, understand and scan at the highest level in order to provide information about the dictionary. In this study, it is aimed to make a lexicographical examination of the “Osmanlı Mutfak Sözlüğü” prepared by Priscilla Mary Işın within the framework of theoretical lexicography by making use of the technique prepared by Howard Jackson in his book “Lexicography: An Introduction”. The type of the dictionary, the type of items, the arrangement of the items, the spelling, and phonetic information in the partial structure of the dictionary, grammatical information, definition methods, the origin information of the items, usage information, examples used in the definition, and references within the dictionary are analysed in terms of contemporary lexicography.
