Medya Okuryazarlığı Bağlamında Ortaokul Öğrencilerinin Sosyal Medya Algıları: Bir Metafor Çalışması

Abstract:

Bu araştırmanın amacı ortaokul öğrencilerinin sosyal medya algılarını metaforlar aracılığıyla tespit etmektir. Nitel araştırma temelinde kurgulanan araştırmanın çalışma grubunu Manisa ili Yunusemre ilçesinde yer alan bir devlet ortaokulunun her kademesinden gönüllülük esasına göre belirlenen 153 öğrenci oluşturmaktadır. Yapılandırılmış metafor formuyla toplanan veriler içerik analizine tabi tutulmuştur. Araştırma bulgularına göre sosyal medya ile ilgili birbirinden bağımsız 68 anlamlı metafor üretilmiştir. Öğrencilerin en fazla ürettikleri metaforlar sırasıyla dünya, hayat, kitap, mektup ve çöplük kavramları olmuştur. Anlam örüntüleri dikkate alınarak yapılan gruplandırmada ortaokul öğrencilerinin sosyal medya ile ilgili ürettikleri metaforlar 9 farklı tema (bağımlılık, haberleşme ve iletişim, zaman kaybı, eğlendirme aracı, kapsamlı ve geniş, bilgilendirici ve aydınlatıcı, gereksinim, sosyalleşme, zararlı) altında toplanmıştır. Ortaokul öğrencilerinin çeşitlilik gösteren sosyal medya algıları medya okuryazarlığı bağlamında tartışılmıştır.

This study aims to determine school students' perceptions of social media through examining the metaphors they develop. It is based on quality research. The study group consists of 153 volunteer students from all degrees of a public middle school in Yunusemre district of Manisa province. The data was collected through a structured metaphor form developed by the researchers. Then, a content analysis is conducted on the available data. The research findings reveal that 68 meaningful metaphors about social media being independent of one another have been produced. The metaphors produced by the participating students include concepts, such as earth, life, books, letters, and garbage. These metaphors were grouped under 9 basic themes (addiction, communication, time waste, entertainment tool, comprehensive and broad, informative and enlightening, necessity, socialization, and dangerous and harmful). Middle school students' varying perceptions of social media were discussed in the context of media literacy, then.
