18 Mart 1915 tarihinde Çanakkale Boğazı’nı denizden geçemeyen İtilâf Devletleri, 25 Nisan 1915 tarihinden 9 Ocak 1916 tarihine kadar sürecek olan Gelibolu üzerinden bir amfibi harekâtı ve müteakiben bir kara harekâtı ile harbin hedefini ele geçirmeye çalışmış, ancak bunda da başarılı olamamıştır. Bu kapsamda İtilâf Devletleri, Osmanlı Devleti’nin Marmara Denizi’nden Çanakkale Cephesi’ni takviyesini engellemek maksadıyla denizaltı harekâtı planlamış ve bu nedenle çok sayıda denizaltıyı gizli yollardan Marmara Denizi’ne nakletmiştir. Osmanlı Donanması, gerek Boğaz’ın dar geçitlerinde mevkilendirdiği ağ ve mayın maniaları, gerekse Marmara Denizi’ndeki su üstü gemileri ile İtilâf Devletleri’nin denizaltı harekâtını önemli ölçüde sekteye uğratmıştır. Bu dönemde Osmanlı Donanması tarafından İstanbul ve diğer Marmara Limanları’ndan Çanakkale Cephesi’ne yönelik deniz ulaştırması emniyete alınmıştır. Savaş süresince çıkan fırsatlardan istifade edilerek, İtilâf Devletleri donanma gemilerine ve İtilâf deniz ulaştırmasına taarruzlar tertiplenmiştir. Bu kapsamda 30 Nisan 1915 günü Osmanlı Donanması’ndan Sultanhisar torpidobotu, Avustralya’ya ait AE-2 denizaltısını torpillemiş, Muâvenet-i Milliye torpido muhribi 13 Mayıs 1915 gecesi İngiliz Goliath zırhlısını batırmıştır.
