Abstract:

Science is a discipline of science with many abstract or difficult to understand due to its nature. One of the ways to concrete these abstract and difficult to understand concepts and make them more understandable is to include the study of modeling in the classes. But the modeling process is not as easy as it is thought, and requires long breathing work. This is believed to ensure that the knowledge of what the skills students should have in the modeling processes, the models to be created and the teaching to be performed with them will be effective. In this regard, the purpose of the research is to identify the skills that high school students need in the modeling process. The study included a total of 57 students, including 17th class, 22th class and 18th class, who took the course of Selective Sciences Applications. The research was carried out by the specific case study method of the quality research methods, and the data was collected by interviews and researchers' field notes. The data collected is subject to content analysis, the data obtained is submitted in a tubular manner. Under the title of mental skills for modeling, space skills (spatial visualization, spatial perception, spatial rotation), original ideas production, analogy mind-execution and structural relationships matching; under the title of processal skills for modeling, material-instrument relationship establishment, material-model relationship establishment, model research and model plan preparation, a total of eight skills have been determined. These skills may be very important to ensure that students get better quality products in their modeling processes. For the strengthening of the information learned by doing it, the high level of students’ skills in the model production processes in terms of the materialization of abstract concepts, will also directly affect their learning of science.
