Abstract:

When the Great Offensive launched by the Turkish army during the national struggle ended in victory, the path of the armistice was opened. Ismet Pasha was appointed on behalf of Mustafa Kemal Pasha to represent the Government of the Grand National Assembly of Turkey (TBMM) at the armistice talks to be held in Mudanya. The Armistice of Mudanya, held between 3 and 11 October 1922, was a great diplomatic success for the government of the parliament. After the armistice, preparations for the peace conference began. Mustafa Kemal Pasha intended to send Ismet Pasha, who was active in the Mudanya armistice, to peace talks. The general opinion within the assembly was that Rauf Bey and Reza Nur Bey should be sent. After all, Ismet Pasha was first appointed head of the delegation that would go to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and then to the conference. Parliament gave a 12-point instruction to the delegation that will go to the conference. When Ismet Pasha returned to Turkey with his delegation, he was subjected to heavy criticism from the second group, especially on the grounds that he did not comply with Misaki Milli and this instruction. The second group claimed that Mustafa Kemal Pasha, as well as Ismet Pasha, ignored Misaki Milli. In the end, the Lausanne peace treaty was approved by the parliament with 206 votes against 13 votes.
