Abstract:

In this study, the number of syllables, words and sentences 6 and 7-year old children use in the stories they tell based on their free painting tasks were examined in terms of age, sex and socio-economic level variables. As for the sample, it consists of totally 72 7-year old children, 36 of whom go to pre-school and 36 of whom go to first class in primary school. The result of the study has shown that the level of girls’ and boys’ use of syllables, words and sentences are the same. When the syllables, words and sentences in the stories are examined in terms of age variable, it is seen that 7-year-old children use more syllables than 6-year-olds. In addition, in terms of socio-economic level variable when syllables, words and sentences are examined, it is found out that children from upper socio-economic level use more words and sentences than children from lower socio-economic level
