Abstract:

Turkmen Turkish represents eastern part of the Turkish vernaculars. As it is a written language which developed under the influence of Chagatay Turkish it also has qualities which are only shared by eastern and northern Turkish vernaculars. Turkmen Turkish written language, which has several dialects, depends on Turkmen-Yomut dialect since 1925. Turkmen Turkish mostly has words from Russian, Arabian, Persian and Mongolian. Borrowed words are generally adapted to language rules of Turkmen Turkish. In this article, words in Türkmence-Türkçe Sözlük have been evaluated in terms of consonant harmony, voiced-unvoiced words. The article only examines bases of words; accordingly, compound words and onomatopoeic words have been excluded. Turkish words are compared according to their forms especially found in Old Turkish Period and Divanu Lugati’t-Türk, on the other hand, borrowed words are compared depending on their base forms. This study, which is not an etymologic research, is restricted with the words available in above-mentioned dictionary.
