Abstract:

Buket Uzuner’s novel, the second in a novel series designed as a Nature Quadrature, deals with various topics in a wide range of The Misfit of Defne Kaman Adventures from Turkish mythology to shamanist tradition, historical artifact smuggling traces to Hittite civilization traces. The events in the novel are reflected in the reader with a divine point of view. The novel in which the soil is taken as the main element in human life is started by the young journalist Defne Kaman coming to Çorum. Buket Uzuner invites the human being to respect for soil ethics and rights via Defne Kaman’s adventures in her novel. Includes the connotations of the soil element in her novel. One of the prominent topics in the novel is “hegemonic masculinity”. Hegemonic masculinity perception is revealed through Muhtar Körağaoğlu. The point of view of Muhtar Körağaoğlu to the woman, the family and himself is produced with the perception of hegemonic masculinity. Gender sociology studies are usually a workplace centered on women. In 1970s, as a field of study within the gender studies, a new concept “masculinity” was mentioned. R. W. Connell, in her Masculinities book, 1995, approaches the concept of masculinity from a theoretical perspective. She describes different masculinities in her book. It refers to how masculinity is formed and how it works in social life. In this study, firstly the hegemonic masculinity perception will be answered theoretically and then the short description of the novel will be made. In the novel, how the hegemonic masculinity perception in social life is conveyed through Muhtar Körağaoğlu with the story of the cesarean birth. It is emphasized that the right of birth should be respected by associating caesarean section with birth soil and maternity. Functioning of hegemonic man in the novel will be analyzed in the following subheadings: “conservative / traditionalist / hardliner / obedient; males distorting situations; marriage institution / patriarchal order issue of gender equality; cesarean birth / uncontrolled anger / trust problem; to strengthen the necessity of a caesarean section with a parallel story”. I will try to explain the existence of hegemonic masculinity in our lives with examples from the novel.
