Etkili Medya Eğitimi Uygulamaları İçin Bir Ölçek Geliştirme Çalışması
2017
Journal:
Turkish Studies
Author:
Abstract:

A Scale Development Study For Effective Media Education Applications
2017
Journal:
Turkish Studies
Author:
Abstract:

This scale development work is designed to identify the level in which teachers using the media tools in their teaching environments can perform effective media applications in their classes. During the preparation of scale materials, the study took advantage of a bookstore entitled "12 Basic Ways to Integrate Media Reading and Critical Thinking with Any Programme". This library is for teachers who want to use media literature in the classroom. After the scan of the literature made, a 5 likert type draft scale, consisting of 52 articles, was prepared and the opinions of 3 Social Information Teachers, 5 Class Teachers and 2 Turkish Teachers, who are specialists in the field were applied. 108 teachers have been applied for the final editing of the "Active Media Education Scale" prepared for the pre-application. In the pre-application, 8 items that teachers say "not suitable" were extracted from scale, 44 items scale was applied to 242 class teachers working in 15 primary/mediary schools and a total of 478 teachers consisting of 236 different branches. In the analyses carried out after the application, the scale substances were reduced to 31 substances. Factor analysis determines the validity of the scale. According to the analysis of the factor, the scale is 0.968 of Kaiser-Meyer-Olkin (KMO) and the Barlett test is 0.00. The measure has four factors that explain 60% of the total variance. The confidence ratio (Cronbach alpha) is achieved as α=0.961. These obvious values show that the scale is a valid and reliable scale.

Abstract:

This scale development study was prepared to determine to what extent teachers, who make use of media tools in teaching environment, can perform effective media applications in their classrooms. In this study while preparing scale items, ıt was benefited a booklet in the name of "The 12 Basic Ways to Integrate Media Literacy and Critical Thinking into Any Curriculum. This booklet was for teachers who are interested in using media literacy in their classroom curricula. After reviewing the literature, a 5 point likert-type draft scale consisting of 52 items were employed and the opinions of 3 Social Studies Teachers, 5 Primary school Teachers and 2 Turkish Teachers, who are experts in their field, have been asked. "Effective Media Education Scale (EMEÖ)" was prepared for pre-application and applied to 108 teachers for last editing. In the pre-application, 8 items were removed from the scale that the teachers found "not suitable". The 44-item scale was applied to 478 teachers in total consisting of 242 primary school teachers and 236 teachers of different branches who were employed in 15 primary and secondary schools located in Van province and district. In the analyzes made after the application, the scale items were reduced to 31 items. The construct validity of the scale was determined by factor analysis. As a result of the factor analysis, the Kaiser-MeyerOlkin(KMO) value was found to be 0.96 and Barlett’s test significance value was established to be 0.00. It was found to have four factors explaining 60 % of the total variance of the scale. The internal consistency coefficient (Cronbach’s alpha) value estimated for the reliability analysis of the scale was obtained as α=0.961. These values reveal that the scale is a valid and reliable scale.
