Orta Asya’da bozkır hayatı yaşayan Türklerin hayatlarında hayvanlar önemli bir yer tutmuştur. Türk menşeli olduğu düşünülen 12 hayvanlı takvim, her biri bir hayvan adıyla anılan 12 yıllık devre esasına dayanmaktadır. Hayvanlar Türklerin inançlarında da önemli bir yere sahiptir; Gök Tanrı, Manihaizm, Budizm gibi dinlerde hayvanlar çeşitli düşünceleri veya ruhları temsil etmiştir. Şamanizm inancında yılan, Şaman’ı kötü ruhlara karşı korurken, Budizm inancında var oluş döngüsünün merkezinde bulunan yılan, kızgınlığı temsil eder. Budizm’deki reenkarnasyon inancına göre önceki hayatlarında kötülük yapan canlılar, bir sonraki hayatlarında dünyaya geldiklerinde ruhları, karanlıklar dünyasında yılan, fare, domuz vb… hayvanların bedeninde dünyaya gelir. Türklerin sosyal ve dini hayatlarında çeşitli inançları sembolize eden yılan, edebi eserlerine de konu olmuş ve edebi eserlerde 12 hayvanlı takvimin yılan yılı anlamında, Budizm inancının işlendiği dini metinlerde hayatlarında kötülük yapan canlıların bir sonraki yaşamında ruhlarının yılan bedeninde dirilmesi gibi anlamlarda kullanılmıştır. Yılan mitolojide de kendine yer bulmuş ve doğu ile batı mitolojilerinde yaşamsal kudreti, gücü sembolize etmiştir. Yunan mitolojilerinde kayıp hazinelerin bekçisidir. Yine batı ve doğu mitolojilerinde halka şeklini almış yılan en eski evrenin bekçisidir, doğu ve batı mitolojilerinde kuyruğunu ağzına almış, kuyruğunu ısıran yılan sonsuzluğu sembolize eder. Özellikle ölümsüzlüğü sembolize eden halka halindeki kuyruğunu ısıran yılan şeklini biz resim, heykel gibi güzel sanatlarda da buluruz.

The animals have an important role in the life of the Turks who lived in the steps of middle Asia. The 12 animal celender that is thought to be turkish origin is based on a 12 year period each named by an animal. Animals are also have an important role on the believes of the Turks. Animals represents various thoughts and spirits at the religions such as Sky God, Manichaeism and Buddhism. While snake protects the Shaman against the evil spirits in the shamanism religion, it is in the center of existence loop and represents the anger in Buddhism. According to the reincarnation belief in budhism, The spirits of the creatures who do evil in their previous lives, will reincarnate in the world of darkness in the body of animals such as snake, mouse, pig etc. Snake symbolises various believes in the social and religous believes of Turks and İt was also subjected in literary Works. It is used In literary works as a snake year of 12 animal celender , in the religious texts of buddhism it is used in the meanings of resurrection of the creatures who do evils in their life , in a snake body for their next life. Sanake has found a place in mythology and the vital power eastern and in western mythology, power was symbolized snake, Greek mythology is the guardian of the lost treasure; again the public has taken shape in the western and eastern mythology, the old serpents is the guardian of the cosmos. İn the eastern and western mythology has taken his tail in his mouth snake biting its tail symbolizes eternity.
