Türkiye gibi gelişmekte olan ve petrol ithal eden bir ekonomide pek çok sektör, doğrudan ya da dolaylı olarak hemen hemen tüm endüstrilerde bir girdi olarak ciddi anlamda petrole bağımlıdır. Bu yüzden de petrol fiyatlarındaki artışlar girdi fiyatlarını artırmakta ve bu durum sonuçta üretim maliyetlerin artmasını beraberinde getirerek işsizlik oranlarını etkilemektedir. Bunun yanı sıra petrol fiyatlarındaki artış enflasyon, ekonomik büyüme, ekonomik kalkınma, kamu harcamaları, kamu gelirleri, bütçe açığı, faiz oranları gibi birçok ekonomik değişken üzerinde de olumsuz etkiye sahiptir. Literatürde petrol fiyatları ve işsizlik arasındaki ilişkiyi Türkiye için inceleyen çok az sayıda çalışma (bknz: Dogrul ve Soytas (2010); Erkan ve diğ., (2011)) vardır. Bu çalışmanın amacı 1980-2012 dönemi itibarıyla Türkiye için işsizlik oranları ile petrol fiyatları arasındaki ilişkinin varlığı ve yönünü araştırmaktır. Bu amaçla çalışmada yapısal kırılmaları dikkate alan Zivot-Andrews ve Kapetanios birim kök testi, Gregory-Hansen eşbütünleşme testi ile Toda-Yamamoto nedensellik analizi kullanılmıştır. Zivot-Andrews ve Kapetanios birim kök testine göre hem petrol fiyatları hem de işsizlik oranları serileri durağandırlar. Bu seriler arasındaki uzun dönemli ilişki Gregory-Hansen eşbütünleşme testi ile incelenmiş ve değişkenler arasında uzun dönemde eşbütünleşme ilişkisi olmadığı sonucuna ulaşılmıştır. Petrol fiyatları ve işsizlik değişkenleri arasındaki nedensellik ilişkisini tespit etmek için yapılan Toda-Yamamoto nedensellik analizine göre nedensellik sonuçları beklenildiği gibi petrol fiyatlarından işsizlik oranlarına doğru tek yönlü bir nedensellik ilişkisini göstermektedir.
A developing country and oil-importing economy like Turkey many sectors, directly or indirectly is heavily dependent on the oil as inputs for almost every industrial sector. Because of this increase in oil prices increases inputs cost, consequently increasing production costs affect unemployment rate. In addition to this increase in oil prices has affect almost several economic indicators like; inflation, economic growth, economic development, exchange rate, public expenditures, public revenues, budget deficits, interest rates etc.. In the existing literature there are very few studies (see: Dogrul ve Soytas (2010); Erkan and et al., (2011)) which is investigated the relationship between oil prices and unemployment in Turkey. The purpose of this study is to investigate the long-run relationship between Unemployment rates and Oil prices in Turkey over the period from 1980 to 2012 by utilizing the Zivot-Andrews and Kapetanios unit root tests, Gregory-Hansen cointegration test and Toda-Yamamoto causality methods. Zivot-Andrews and Kapetanios unit root tests resulst shows that both oil pricies and unemployment rates are stationary. According to Gregory-Hansen cointegration test result there is not cointegration relationship between Unemployment and Oil prices in the long run. The results of Toda-Yamamoto causality test shows that there is unidirectional causality relation from Oil prices to Unemployment rates as expected.
