Bu makalede Artvin ili ağızlarından olan Uşhum Köyü Türkçesinin ses özellikleri Zikri Turan’ın “Artvin İli Yusufeli İlçesi Uşhum Köyü Ağzı” çalışmasına dayanılarak ele alınmaktadır. Ses özellikleri bakımından Uşhum ağzı Kartvel dillerinden olan Lazca ve Gürcücenin fonetik özelliklerini aynen yansıtmaktadır. Bu durum alt katman dili olarak Kartvel dillerinin beş vokalli ve patlayıcı K' ve G' konsonantlarını koruduğunu göstermektedir. Bu durum ya Oğuzların Kartvel fonetik sistemini benimsediğini ya da yerel Kartvellerin daha sonra benimsedikleri üst katman dili Oğuzcanın, alt katman dili olan Kartvelcenin fonetik özelliklerini yok edemediğini ifade etmektedir.
