Abstract:

The purpose of this research is to explore the mediating role of self-esteem in the relationship between adolescent parental attitudes and problem-solving abilities, leading to new work to be done in this regard. The sample of the study consisted of 1144 students who attended to the 10th and 11th grades in secondary education institutions in the central districts of Mersin province in 2015-2016 academic year. "Parental Attitude Scale", "Interpersonal Problem Solving Inventory", "Coopersmith Self Respect Inventory" and "Personal Information Form" were used in the study. Pearson Moments Multiplication Correlation Coefficient was used to examine the relationships between the variables, regression analysis to examine the mediator role, and sobel z test to determine the significance of the mediating effect. Research findings indicate that self-esteem plays a partial role in the relationship between democratic parental attitude and constructive problem solving, and the relationship between protective expectant parental attitude and probing negative attitude. In addition, according to the results of the research, it was determined that self-esteem had a complete mediating role in the relationship between authoritarian parental attitude and probing negative approach and constructive problem solving from the subscales of problem-solving skills.
