Abstract:

Among women researches, there have been several examinations relating to social, political and religious role of Byzantine women. Studies were visualized and enriched by the assessments made via written resources as well as monumental mural paintings, book paintings and small objects. In this article, it is aimed to observe data on ceramic material decorated with woman figure. In parallel with the information gained by surface and excavation researches, there are very few antique with woman figure which has publication. However, the general idea obtained is that the woman figures on ceramics which is a cheap and appealing to middle class consumer were scratched very schematically and used to give meaning to the basic functions such as marriage, gifts for a death and vow instead of being the subject of imperial women and lives of high standard.
