Abstract:

Unfortunately, Turkey lacks a comprehensive inventory of historical bridges in the country. This paper that deals with the historical bridges aims to contribute to the creation of such an inventory within the context of the Manisa province. The paper is largely based on the on-site field studies and local sources of information. Likewise, brief information is provided about the locations and various characteristics of the historical bridges based on maps, satellite images, archived records and various written works. Locations of the bridges are evaluated in terms of their transportation geography, and functional sustainability. Furthermore, the paper deals with protection of the historical bridges, which are important cultural heritages of Turkey, through restorations, and benefitting from them in various ways, particularly with respect to the cultural tourism.
