Abstract:

Human beings are different from one another not only in terms of physical appearance but also in terms of ethnicity, language, etc. These differences tend to form or reinforce the concept of 'the Other.' In addition, it seems that the primary factors contributing to the forming or reinforcing of the perception of 'the Other' are still the ones related to religious differences. In this article, we will look into religion-related differences in the Quranic perspective, drawing on the ways used to deal with the concept of 'the Other' throughout Islamic history. More specifically, in this article, we seek to put forth an account effective and useful in dealing with the concept of 'the Other' in the perspective of Quranic revelations. In doing that we will be especially focusing on the relations between peoples of different religions in the Ottoman Empire and how the relevant Quranic verses were interpreted and acted out by the Ottomans. By investigating the Quranic perspective and how it was implemented in history, we seek to make a contribution to modern ways that are used in dealing with the concept of 'the Other.'
