Başarılı bir tasarım için, tasarımcının tasarım ilke ve elemanları konularına hakim olması önemli bir gerekliliktir. Tasarım ilke ve elemanlarının grafik tasarım eğitimi alan öğrencilere temel tasarım veya temel sanat eğitimi dersi olarak grafik tasarım dersinden önce veriliyor olması bu önemin mantıksal bir programa dönüştürüldüğünün göstergesidir. Ülkemizde güzel sanatlar eğitimi veren yükseköğretim kurumları müfredatında yer alan temel tasarım veya temel sanat eğitim dersleri, bu bölümlerde eğitim gören öğrencileri grafik tasarım eğitimi için hazırlamaktadır. Bu bağlamda çalışmada, Gazi Üniversitesi Gazi Eğitim Fakültesi Güzel Sanatlar Eğitimi Bölümü Resim-iş Eğitimi Anabilim Dalı, Abant İzzet Baysal Üniversitesi Eğitim Fakültesi Güzel Sanatlar Eğitimi Bölümü Resim-İş Eğitimi Anabilim Dalı ve Uludağ Üniversitesi Eğitim Fakültesi Güzel Sanatlar Eğitimi Bölümü Resim-İş Eğitimi ABD de okutulan “Temel Tasarım” ve “Grafik Ana Sanat Atölye” dersleri incelenmiştir. Grafik tasarım eğitiminde temel tasarım derslerinin önemi vurgulanarak, grafik tasarım eğitimi alan öğrencilerin nitelikli eserler ortaya koyabilen tasarımcılar olabilmelerinde, temel tasarım/temel sanat eğitimi derslerinin gerekliliği ortaya konulmuştur.
