Abstract:

At the beginning of the 20th century, separatist rebellions in the Balkans and the division of the Ottoman State’s territory in North Africa between Britain and France led to anxiety and disappointment in the Ottoman society. In order to eliminate this negative picture, the army and the Navy had to be strengthened immediately. But given the economic difficulties within the state, this thought has begun to be discussed in the public that this thought could be possible with a topical mobility. These discussions will speed up the process of establishing the Ottoman Naval Society in Istanbul. The Community, established by volunteers who gathered together to protect the homeland and stop the evil movement, has begun the work to strengthen the Ottoman Navy. The community has accelerated its organizational work both abroad and abroad and has announced its name to large crowds within a short time with its activities. The main source of income of the community is the same and cash aid is gathered in the framework of the Usûl-i Cibâyet Instructions. The Commonwealth, which is supported by a large crowd, has played an active role in the purchase of many fighter vessels in the short period. The social and cultural activities that the community has done to obtain donations include theatre, cinema, concerts, sports, books, mecmua and risale printing. The material and spiritual support of a very large portion of society to these cultural events can be regarded as an intimate effort of the people to save the state. The Society, which has made a great contribution to the Turkish sport, has set the foundations of a association called "Maritime Country" in order to encourage young people to maritime and maritime sports. In this study, the social-cultural work of the Ottoman Naval Society and the activities of the Maritime Land were evaluated by addressing the TITE Archive documents.
