Analysis Of Values Education Books Prepared For Children In The Context Of 10 Core Values

Abstract:

The aim of the study was to determine the values conveyed in children's books that focus on core values which were determined by Ministry of Education. Children who acquire values at an early stage of their lives can be more sensitive to upholding these values in their later years, thus becoming more inclined towards social cohesion. From this perspective, it is believed that literary products have an important role in the transmission and teaching of values. This research was conducted based on the document review method, which is one of the qualitative research methods. In determining the values covered in the research, the 10 core values determined by the Ministry of National Education were taken as a basis. The 10 core values consist of 'love, respect, patience, responsibility, trustworthiness, friendship, helpfulness, patriotism, self-discipline, and justice'. Children's books related to values were analyzed based on these values according to the sub-problems of the study. Frequency analysis was used to present the observation frequency of the obtained data. According to the findings obtained from the research, it was found that children's books focusing on values aimed to instill the values of friendship, helpfulness, love, trustworthiness, respect, patience, responsibility, and honesty. It was also found that the most preferred values were respect (5) and friendship (5), followed by helpfulness (4), love (4), honesty (2), patience (2), self-discipline (1), and responsibility (1) in that order. On the other hand, according to the obtained data, it was found that patriotism and justice values were not included in children's books that focus on values.
