Birleşik isimler, yeni bir kavramı karşılamak için iki veya daha fazla kelimenin bir araya getirilmesiyle oluşan yeni kelimelerdir. Anlam bakımından iki tür birleşik isim vardır: 1. Belirtili birleşik isimler: taş fırın, çayevi. Belirtili birleşik isimler iki unsurdan oluşur. Birinci unsur, belirten; ikinci unsur ise belirtilendir. Ayrıca ikinci unsur, birleşik ismin baş unsuru olarak tanımlanır. Her bir unsur, birden fazla sözcük türünden oluşabilir. Fakat bu tür birleşik isimlerde baş unsur, hiçbir zaman yalın bir sıfat olmaz. Yalnız bu gruba ait olan kalıplaşmış birleşik isimlerde yalın bir sıfat birinci ve ikinci unsur olabilir: karabaş birleşik kelimesinin birinci, sırtıkara kelimesin ikinci unsuru bir sıfattır. 2. Belirtisiz birleşik isimler: alışveriş, demirbaş. Belirtisiz birleşik isimler de iki unsurdan oluşmaktadır. Her bir unsur da birbirinden farklı sözcük türünden oluşan birden fazla öğeden oluşabilir. Belirtisiz birleşik isimlerde belirtili birleşik isimlerden farklı olarak bir baş öğe bulunmaz, her kelimenin kendi başına bir anlamı vardır. Birleşik isimler ayrı ve bitişik yazılabilir. Bazı birleşik isimler ayrı yazıldığında anlamı da değişir: aslanağzı bir çiçektir ve aslan ağzı ise herhangi bir aslanın ağzı demektir. Ayrıca birleşik isimler, biçimbilimsel olarak isim, fiil, sıfat vb. gibi çok çeşitli kelime türleri ve bazı eklerle yapılır. Birleşik isim yapılarında en önemli eklerden birisi de Türkçeye özgü iyelik ekidir. Bu ek bazı birleşik isimlerde anlam ayırt etmektedir, kadın doktor ve kadın doktoru gibi.
Compound nouns are new words formed by combining two or more words to meet a new concept. There are two kinds of compound nouns in terms of meaning: determinative compound nouns: taş fırın ‘stone oven’, çayevi ‘teahouse’. Determinative compound nouns consist of two elements. The first element specifies the second and the second element is defined as the head of the compound noun. Each phrase can consist of more than one word type. However, the leading element in such compound nouns can be never an adjective. Only in stereotyped compound nouns belonging to this group, a simple adjective can be the first and the second element: the first element of the compound word karabaş ‘black head (shepherd dog)’ and the second element of the word sırtıkara ‘black back (a kind of fish)’ is an adjective. 2. Copulative compound nouns: alışveriş ‘buying-selling; shopping’, demirbaş ‘iron head (inventory)’. Copulative compound nouns also consist of two phrases. Each phrase can also consist of more than one element consisting of different word types. Copulative compound nouns, unlike definite compound nouns, do not have a head element, each word has its own meaning. However, compound nouns can be written separately and adjacent. When some compound nouns are spelled separately, their meaning also changes: aslanağzı ‘snapdragon’ is a flower and aslan ağzı ‘lion's mouth’ is any lion's mouth. In addition, compound nouns are morphologically made with a wide variety of word types (such as noun, verb, adjective) and some suffixes. One of the most important suffixes in compound noun structures is the Turkish-specific possessive suffix. This suffix distinguishes meaning in some compound nouns, such as kadın doktor ‘lady-doctor’ and kadın doktoru ‘gynecologist’.
