Abstract:

This study aims to study the attitude and intention to receive psychological assistance in university students according to some demographic variables (gender, class level, faculty type, romantic relationship status, previously receiving psychological assistance, the type of specialist who received assistance, the usefulness of the assistance). The sample of the study consists of 884 (514 girls, 370 men) bachelor students who are studying at Bolu Abant İzzet Baysal University in the 2019-2020 educational year. Research data obtained using the attitude scale on receiving psychological assistance, the psychological assistance intention inventory and the Personal Information Form were analyzed with t-test and ANOVA. The research finds that the attitude and intention of university students to receive psychological assistance points significantly vary according to gender, class level, faculty, romantic relationship status, previously receiving psychological assistance, the usefulness of assistance. 81.9% of participants said that a psychological consultancy center was needed at their universities they studied. However, the attitude towards receiving psychological assistance and the intention to receive psychological assistance have not varied according to the type of specialist who received the assistance. The findings were discussed in the context of the literature.
