Abstract:

The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of teaching aesthetic listening strategies with fairy tales on the listening skills of 5th grade students. For this purpose, quasi-experimental pre-test and post-test design with control groups were used in this research. The study group of the research consists of 57 5th grade students studying in the spring semester of the 2013-2014 academic year of a state school located in the center of Afyonkarahisar city. Before the experimental procedure, the fairy tale achievement test and the attitude scale toward listening were applied as a pre-test to the students of 5-A class which was identified as the experimental, and 5-B class which was identified as the control group at random. During the experimental process, the students in the experimental group were taught aesthetic listening strategies with fairy tales for eight weeks. An aesthetic listening strategy was taught with a fairy tale chosen according to the students’ level two hours a week to the students. The students in the control group acted according to the current program in the standard procedure. After the experimental procedure, the fairy tale achievement test and the attitude scale toward listening were applied to the students in the experimental group and the control group as a post-test. The study data were collected through the “Listening Skill Attitude Scale” and “Fairy Tale Achievement Test”.  The data were analyzed through the SPSS package program. In quantitative data analysis, t-test, Mann-Whitney U Test, Shapiro Wilk Test and Kolmogorov-Smirnov Tests were used for independent groups. The study results showed that the students’ listening comprehension scores in the experimental group were higher than those in the control group and a significant difference was found between them.  When the scores of the students in the experimental and control groups obtained from the attitude scale were compared, no significant difference was found. The study proved that teaching aesthetic listening strategies contributed to the development of the listening skills of 5th grade students.
