Abstract:

In every period of history, states wanted to know the population living within their borders for a good administration. The census was made for very important reasons such as military service, determination of taxpayers, and planning of income and expenses. The first population census in the Ottoman Empire was made during the reign of Mahmut II, and it was aimed to determine the soldiers for the Muslim population and the taxpayers for the non-Muslims. These population registers kept during the Ottoman period are extremely important to understand the demographic and socio-economic structure of the region to which they belong. In this study, H. 1259 / M. The non-Muslim population register numbered 2328, dated 1843-1844, was examined. In the study, in order to compare the non-Muslim population numerically with the Muslim population, the book in which the Muslim population of Hafik town of 2322 was recorded was also examined. With the data obtained from the books, the population structure of the Hafik district on the date in question was evaluated quantitatively and qualitatively. In the study, data such as the population of the non-Muslim people living in the Hafik district in the last periods of the Ottoman Empire, the number of households, the number of people per household, the jizye tax obtained from the region, the physical characteristics of the male population, and the age distribution of the male population were transferred
