Abstract:

Listening, one of the basic language skills, has an important place in the social and academic development of individuals. This situation brings to the fore the issue of how effective listening should be. In terms of academic development, students' use of correct learning strategies in listening activities contributes positively to their development In this study, it was aimed to determine the effect of the empathic listening strategy, which is a listening strategy, on students' listening comprehension skills. Experimental research was designed to determine the effect of the empathic listening strategy. Accordingly, experimental and control groups were formed. In the study, the students in the experimental group used the empathic listening strategy. The students in the control group participated in listening activities without using any listening strategy. Achievement tests were prepared for the listening texts used in the activities. The answers given by the students to these tests were analyzed using the t-test. According to the results obtained, it was concluded that the use of the empathic listening strategy is more effective in listening comprehension and vocabulary areas than in situations where no listening strategy is used.
