Görsel ve kurgusal bir sanat olan sinema kendi imkânları içinde doğayı yeniden ve farklı boyutlarıyla üreterek izleyiciye sunmaktadır. Bu sunuş tarzınıniyi örneklerinden biri de Avatar (2009) filmidir. Avatar filmi kullandığı özel efektler, taşıdığı politik ve dini temalar bakımından bir kült film olarak nitelenebilir. Sinemanın teknik imkanları ve teorilerinden faydalanan yönetmen mekanların kurgulanışı, sahneler, söylemler ve efektler üzerinden insan zihnine ulaşarak sinema üzerinden insan doğa ilişkisi üzerine seyircide bir deneyim oluşturmayı amaçlamıştır. Çalışma insanın doğayla ilişkisini/iletişimini, bu ilişkiyi şekillendiren düşünsel ve pratik altyapıyı Avatar filmi üzerinden analiz etmektir. Bu amaçla insanın doğa tasavvurundaki tarihsel dönüşüm ele alınmış, ayrıca insanın doğayı algılama ve onunla iletişime geçme biçiminde teknolojinin yerini vurgulamak amacıyla teknoloji yoğunluklu ve bağımlısı insan ile teknoloji yoksunu Na’vi halkının doğa ile iletişimlerinin karşılaştırması sunulmuştur. Çalışmada filmin mekan kurgusu ile filmde kullanılan temalardaki kültürel ve inançsal etkiler irdelenmiştir. İnsanların ve Na’vilerin iletişim süreçleri ‘iletişime geçme biçimleri’, ‘iletişimde kullanılan araçlar’ ve ‘referans çerçevesi’ kategorileri esas alınarak değerlendirilmiştir.
