Abstract:

The aim of this study is to evaluate the status, function and future of Bitcoin as a new means of exchange, investment and payment in today’s societies re-formed by computer technologies from an economic and social point of view. The study first discussed the exchange, money and economic concepts in the historic process, and then included detailed information about Bitcoin and discussed the subject in the framework of changes in consumer habits. Although there is a lot of money on the market called virtual currency, digital currency, electronic currency or crypto currency according to user yo-rums and obtained information, Bitcoin is ranked first in terms of the volume of transactions and the value against the dollar. However, Bitcoin is more likely to be the investment tool of money. This study is believed to be a theoretical contribution in terms of showing how Bitcoin-specific information technology-changes the classical monetary understanding in societies.
