Avrupa’da Bir Cevelan, Ahmet Mithat Efendi’nin 1889 Stockholm Müsteşrikler Kongresi için çıktığı bir yolculuğu anlatır. Ahmet Mithat, eserde bir taraftan Avrupa kültürünü çok yönlü olarak tanıtırken diğer taraftan Kongre boyunca edindiği izlenimleri, katıldığı toplantılarda ele alınan meseleleri aktarır. Bu meselelerden bir bölümü Türklerle ilgilidir. Türkçe, Türk tarihi, Türk edebiyatı, Tatar ve Osmanlı Türkleriyle birlikte diğer İslam milletlerinin gelişmişlik düzeyleri bu bahisler arasında yer alır. Ahmet Mithat, Kongre dışında değişik vesilelerle Türk ve Avrupa kültürleri arasında karşılaştırmalarda bulunur. Gerek Kongre’de gerekse Kongre dışındaki gezilerinde Ahmet Mithat, Batılıların genel olarak “Şark”ı iyi tanımadıkları gibi Türkleri de tanımadıklarını görür. Avrupa yolculuğundan döndüğünde yazdığı Ahmet Metin ve Şirzad adlı romanıyla da bir yandan milletimizin büyüklüğünü ortaya koymak diğer yandan kültür ve medeniyetimizin savunmasını yapmak ister.
A Cevelan in Europe tells the journey of Ahmet Mithat Efendi to the 1889 Stockholm Congress. Ahmet Mithat in the work, on the one hand, promotes European culture in a diverse way, while on the other hand, the impressions he has gained throughout the Congress, the issues discussed in the meetings he attended. Some of these issues are related to Turks. Turkey, Turkish history, Turkish literature, Tatar and Ottoman Turks, along with other Islamic nations, are among these bets. Ahmet Mithat compares between Turkish and European cultures on various occasions outside the Congress. In his trips outside the Congress, Ahmet Mithat sees that the Western people in general don’t know the “Song” as well as the Turks don’t know it. When he returned from his trip to Europe, with his novel Ahmet Metin and Şirzad, he also wants to show the greatness of our nation on the one hand to defend our culture and civilization on the other.
