Bu araştırmanın amacı okul öncesi eğitim kurumlarında açık oyun alanlarının fiziksel özellikler açısından incelenmesi ve bu kurumlarda görev yapan öğretmenlerin açık oyun alan etkinlikleriyle ilgili görüş ve uygulamalarının belirlenmesidir. Araştırmada veri toplama aracı olarak, araştırmacılar tarafından geliştirilmiş olan Okul Öncesi Eğitim Kurumlarında Açık Oyun Alan Gözlem Listesi ve Okul Öncesi Öğretmenlerinin Açık Oyun Alanı Etkinliklerine ilişkin görüşme formu kullanılmıştır. Araştırmada Kırıkkale il merkezinde bulunan 10 anaokulu ve 10 anasınıfı açık oyun alanı özellikleri açısından incelenmiştir. Araştırma sonucunda incelenen anaokulları ve anasınıflarının açık oyun alanlarının özelliklerinin yetersiz olduğu tespit edilmiştir. İncelenen okul öncesi eğitim kurumlarının tamamında bahçeyi çevreleyen çitin olduğu bununla birlikte, zemin çeşidinin az olduğu, doğal alanlarının anasınıflarında anaokullarından az olduğu, bahçe ekipman ve materyalleri açısından her iki okul türünün yetersiz olduğu, bazı donanım ve araç gerecin (kum ve su alanları ve materyalleri gibi) bulunmadığı belirlenmiştir. Araştırmada 16 anasınıfı, 32 anaokulu öğretmenin açık oyun alanlarıyla ilgili görüşleri alınmıştır. Hem anaokulunda hem de anasınıflarında görev yapan öğretmenlerin açık oyun alanında en çok fen ve oyun etkinliği yapmayı tercih ettikleri görülmüştür.
