Abstract:

Products of oral culture are the sources of different narrations as they change and transform in time. These products are sometimes written and transferred into literary texts, and sometimes they are adapted to scenarios. Animation films are among fields of arts benefiting from the traditional sources of oral culture. Myths, fables, folktales, epics, lullabies and other traditional narrations generate sources of cartoon scenarios. World’s leading animation studios like Walt Disney in the West and Studio Ghibli in the East update classic elements of traditional narrations by reusing and reproducing. Therefore; cultural memories gain continuity. In Turkey, main problems about cinema and cartoon scenarios are genuineness and creativity. However, cultural heritage of Turkey as the source of scenarios is quite rich. It’s important to know and use this cultural accumulation. Here in this study, it was aimed to put forward how to use traditional narrations in animation movie scenarios. Students taking “Story Design” course, at Anadolu University Animation Department, designed different scenarios by using cultural heritage of their geography in a practice named “the usage of traditional narration in animation movie scenarios”. The practice was aimed at indicating how rich the cultural heritage is for creating original and national movie tradition
