Bu araştırmanın amacı, Doğrudan Öğretim Modeli’nin ilkokul dördüncü sınıf öğrencilerinin okuduğunu anlama becerileri üzerindeki etkisini belirlemektir. Araştırmada yöntem olarak ön test - son test kontrol gruplu yarı deneysel desen kullanılmıştır. Çalışma grubu, 2012-2013 eğitim-öğretim yılında Ankara ili Keçiören ilçesindeki bir devlet ilkokulunda iki farklı sınıfta öğrenim gören 49 dördüncü sınıf öğrencisinden oluşmaktadır. Veri toplama aracı olarak araştırmacı tarafından geliştirilen “Okuduğunu Anlama Testi”, “Ana Fikir Değerlendirme Formu” ile “Özet Değerlendirme Formu” kullanılmıştır. Yarı deneysel desenin uygulama sürecinde deney grubundaki Türkçe derslerinde Doğrudan Öğretim Modeli’ne göre okuduğunu anlama becerilerinden metnin ana fikrini bulma ve metni özetleme öğretimi yapılmıştır. Deney grubunda yapılan uygulamalar araştırmacı tarafından yürütülerek toplam 14 haftada tamamlanmıştır. Deney grubundaki Türkçe dersi etkinliklerinin uygulanmasında derslerin her aşaması, Doğrudan Öğretim Modeli basamaklarına uygun olarak tasarlanmış ve uygulanmıştır. Araştırma sonucunda deney grubundaki öğrencilerin okuduğunu anlama, bilgilendirici ve hikâye edici metinlerde ana fikir bulma ve özetleme puanlarının yükseldiği anlaşılmıştır. Ayrıca deney ve kontrol gruplarının okuduğunu anlama, ana fikir bulma ve özetleme puanları arasında deney grubu lehine istatistikî bakımdan anlamlı farklılık olduğu tespit edilmiştir.
