Abstract:

The aim of this study is to examine the relationship between the bride-mother-in-law relationships perceived by married women and their family harmony. The study group of the research is 501 married women living in Turkey, with children and mother-in-law. In the research, criterion and snowball sampling method was used. The data of the study were collected through the Personal Information Form and the Aile Yapısı Değerlendirme Aracı. Frequency and percentage values, Kruskal Wallis-H test, Mann Whitney-U test and Spearman Brown Rank Differences Correlation analysis were used in the analysis of the data. In the study, firstly, the distribution of the bride-mother-in-law relationship type perceived by married women was determined. Then, the perceived bride -mother-in-law relations according to their education levels were compared. Afterwards, the family adjustments of married women were compared according to the perceived bride-mother-in-law relationship type. Finally, the relationship between the bride-mother-in-law relations of married women and their family adjustment was examined. According to the findings; It has been determined that the majority of the participants have neither very close nor very distant relationship perceptions with their mother-in-law, but the participants who have a mother-daughter relationship perception are also significantly higher. In addition, it is seen that the participants with conflicting and broken relationships make up a very small part of the sample. It has been determined that women with lower education levels have more positive perceptions of relationships with their mother-in-law. It was determined that the family adjustment scores of married women with conflicting and broken relationships were low. Finally, the relationship between married women's relationships with their mother-in-law and family adjustment was found to be significant for the Turkish sample. The findings were discussed in line with the literature.
