Ortaokul Öğrencilerinin ‘Ders Olarak Matematiğe’ Yönelik Algılarının İncelenmesi

Matematik, bireylerin düşünme sistemlerinin gelişmesinde, hayatlarında karşılaştıkları olayları anlamlandırmada ve sorunlarına çözüm bulmada kritik bir öneme sahiptir. Bu sebeple matematiğin iyi bir şekilde anlaşılması ve bireylerin matematik başarısı, üzerinde hususiyetle durulan konulardır. Matematik başarısını etkileyen çeşitli etmenler bulunmaktadır. Bireylerin kendilerine has bir anlamlandırma süreci olarak tanımlanan algı, aynı zamanda matematik başarısını etkileyen önemli içsel faktörlerdendir. Bu bağlamda araştırmacıların algıları ve bu algıları etkileyen değişkenleri anlaması matematik başarısı açısından da önem teşkil etmektedir. Bu çalışmanın amacı, ortaokul öğrencilerinin ders olarak matematik kavramına ait algılarını, belirlemek ve matematiğe yönelik oluşturdukları bu algıların altında yatan nedenleri ortaya çıkarmaktır. Araştırmada nitel araştırma yöntemlerinden olgu bilim kullanılmıştır. Araştırmanın çalışma grubunu 2017-2018 Eğitim Öğretim Yılı İstanbul ili Üsküdar ilçesinde bulunan üç devlet okulundan 295, iki özel okuldan 262 olmak üzere toplam 557 ortaokul öğrencisi oluşturmaktadır. Araştırmada veri toplama aracı olarak demografik bilgi ölçeği, kelime ilişkilendirme testi ve odak grup görüşme soru formu kullanılmıştır. Veriler içerik analizi yöntemi ile analiz edilerek kategori, tema, kodları belirlenmiş ve kodların frekans ve yüzde tabloları oluşturulmuştur. Araştırma sonucunda öğrencilerin matematik algıları “Ders, konu, olumsuz düşünce, olumlu düşünce, hayat, duygular, öğretmen, fayda, zekâ, tanım, önemli kişi, meslek, aile ve bilim” olmak üzere 14 kategoride ortaya çıkmış ve matematiğe yönelik algılarının çeşitlilik gösterdiği bulgusuna ulaşılmıştır. Ayrıca matematiğe yönelik algıların bireysel özellikler, öğretmen, fayda, konu, aile ve ders gibi faktörlerden dolayı da farklılaştığı da ortaya çıkmıştır.

Mathematics plays a critical role in the development of individuals’ thinking systems, in understanding the events they encounter in their lives and in finding solutions to their problems. Therefore, the good understanding of mathematics and the success of individuals in mathematics are specifically focused on themes. There are various factors that influence mathematical success. The perception, defined as a process of individual understanding, is also one of the important internal factors that influence mathematical success. In this context, the understanding of the perceptions of the researchers and the variables that affect these perceptions is also important in terms of mathematical success. The aim of this study is to identify the perceptions of high school students of the concept of mathematics as a lesson, and to reveal the underlying causes of these perceptions they create towards mathematics. In the research methods of quality research is used factual science. The study’s work group is composed of a total of 557 secondary school students, including 295 from three public schools located in the province of Istanbul or Üsküdar, from two private schools to 262. The study used demographic information scale, word linking test and focus group interview question form as a data collection tool. The data is analyzed through the content analysis method and the categories, themes, codes are determined and the frequency and percentage tables of the codes are created. The study found that students’ mathematical perceptions appeared in 14 categories, including “Lessons, subject, negative thinking, positive thinking, life, emotions, teachers, benefits, intelligence, definitions, important persons, professions, families and sciences” and that their perceptions of mathematics were diverse. It is also revealed that mathematics perceptions differ due to individual characteristics, teachers, benefits, subject, family and lessons.

Mathematics plays a critical role on development of individual's thought system, and provides frameworks for defining and understanding of environement and finding solutions of their daily problems. Hence, understanding the basics of mathematics is widely studied on by researchers. It is discovered that several factors affect mathematics achievement. As perception is defined as individuals’ unique interpretation process, it can be considered as major internal factor of mathematics achievement. In that regard, understanding both perception and relevant variables that determines perception becomes very important in math achievement aspects. In this research, main objective is to examine the mathematics perceptions of secondary school students. In addition to that, the reasons lying behind student’s perceptions related mathematics is also another focus point of this study. Phenomenology is used as a qualitative method on this research. Sample group consists of 557 students; 295 of them attending to three different public schools and 265 of them attending to private schools, in 2017-2018 Academic Year. For data collection, Demographic information scale, Word Association and Focus Group Interview Forms are used. Collected data is processed with content analysis method. During this process categories, themes and codes are determined; and tables related frequencies and percentages of codes are created. Findings of research shows that the perception of mathematics diversified throughout students. While evaluating the perception of mathematics of students, 14 different categories, which are found “Lesson, subject, negative thoughts, positive thoughts, life, feelings, teacher, benefit, intelligence, description, important person, occupation, family and science”. In addition, students shared their opinion about affecting factors like individual characteristics, teacher, benefit, subject, family and lesson.
