Abstract:

Mehmed Es’ad Aga of Enderun is a diwan poet who lived in the late 18th century and early 19th century and wrote poems amount to be able to organize a diwan besides his several official duties throughout his life. Mainly consisting of Turkish poems, the diwan by the poet, who is considered among the poets of Hazîne-i Humayûn (Imperial Treasury) and wrote poems under the pseudonym of Es’ad, also contains Persian poems. Including 10 Persian poems in his diwan in a period when writing a Persian poem is considered an attainment, the poet also put down Turkish-Arabic-Persian mulamma (macaronic) poems, on paper. Es’ad Aga, who can be considered a nazire (imitation) poet, attracts attention with the tazmins (implications) and tanzirs (arrangements) he wrote for the poems by the poets leaving their mark on the century they lived in such as Ali-Shir Nava'i, Hafez-i Shirazi, Fuzûlî, Bâkî, and Nâbî, Ibrahim Hakkı of Erzurum, and demonstrates his affinity and competency towards the Persian language in the poems he wrote in this language. Furthermore, the macaronic tahmis (quintet) he arranged over the first ghazal found in the Diwan of Hafez and imitated the most among all is one of the poems by Es’ad that are worthy of notice. The aforementioned quintet was included in the study in terms of containing Persian verses within. All 10 Persian poems in the Diwan were written in ghazal form and the implication written for Hafez’s ghazal was organized in quintet form. The aim of this research is to identify the Persian poems in Diwan by Mehmed Esʽad Aga of Enderun and analyze the data of the poems identified. This is followed by the transcriptions and intralingual-translated versions of the aforementioned poems and an overall evaluation of these.
