Abstract:

The fact that smartphones can be accessed anytime and anywhere without physical and spatial restrictions and their excessive use has led to the emergence of the nomophobia problem, which expresses the anxiety experienced by the individual when they cannot access their mobile device. Considering the impact of social networking sites on excessive use of smartphones, it becomes important to ask whether social networking sites have a role in the development of nomophobia. In this context, revealing the relationship between social network usage habits and nomophobia is the aim of this study. The research sample of schools in the state university in Turkey has created a total of 430 undergraduate students. In the study, the Social Networks Usage Purposes Scale and the Nomophobia Scale were used to measure the nomophobia level of the students and the usage purpose of the social networks. According to the results obtained, it was determined that the age, gender and income level of the students were not related to the usage purpose of social networks and nomophobia (p> 0.05). In addition, it was found that the variables of using the internet unlimitedly and using the internet via smartphone are related with the usage purpose of social networks and nomophobia (p <0.05). Finally, it has been determined that there is a weakly significant relationship between the usage purpose of social networks and nomophobia (p <0.05).
