Tayyib Salih’in Kuzeye Göç Mevsimi romanı 20. yüzyıl Afrika ve Arap edebiyatının en önemli eserleri arasında sayılmakta, postkolonyal edebiyatın bir klasiği kabul edilmektedir. Bu romanda, Doğu - Batı medeniyetinin travmatik ve dolayısıyla dramatik ilişkileri, psikolojik ve sosyokültürel yönleri, çarpıcı bir şekilde işlenmiştir. Tayyib Salih’in uzun yıllar ülkesinden uzakta İngiltere’de yaşaması, Doğu ve Batı kültürlerini klişeleşmiş görüşlerden sıyrılarak, farklı yönlerden ele almasına sebep olmuştur. Kuzeye Göç Mevsimi romanı, kazandığı bu bakış açısını başarılı bir şekilde yansıttığı en ünlü eseridir. Doğu ve Batı’nın birbirleri tarafından tanımlanıp açıklanması, oryantalizm ve oksidentalizm kavramlarıyla ifade edilmektedir. Edward Said’in ortaya koyduğu oryantalizm kavramı Batı’nın Doğu hakkındaki varsayımlarını ve görüşlerini ifade etmektedir. Doğu romantizmi gibi servis edilse de, esas olarak oryantalizm, Batı’nın sömürgeci hedeflerini gerçekleştirmek için, gerek Batı, gerek Doğu toplumlarına yönelik argümanlarını kapsamaktadır. Reaktif bir kavram olan oksidentalizm ise, oryantalizme karşı geliştirilmiş bir algıdır. Romanda Doğu ve Batı düşüncesi, oryantalizm ve oksidentalizm gibi birbirine taban tabana zıt bu iki kavram üzerinden ele alınmaktadır. Kuzeye Göç Mevsimi geniş hacimli bir roman olmamasına rağmen, sömürge ve postkolonyal dönemin tarihsel izdüşümlerini yansıtması bakımından da zengin bir içeriğe sahiptir. Bu çalışmada Kuzeye Göç Mevsimi romanında karakterler, mekanlar ve kriminal boyutta olaylarla sembolleştirilen Doğu ve Batı medeniyeti, oryantalizm ve oksidentalizm perspektifinden incelenecektir.
Tayyib Salih's novel The Northern Migration Season is one of the most important works of 20th century African and Arab literature and is considered a classical post-colonial literature. In this novel, the traumatic and therefore dramatic relationships of the Eastern-Western civilization, the psychological and socio-cultural aspects, are treated in a stunning way. Tayyib Salih’s long-term living in England, far from his country, has led him to discourage the Eastern and Western cultures from the clustered opinions, from different aspects. The Northern Immigration Season is the most famous work in which it successfully reflects this perspective it has won. Tayeb Salih's living in England far from his country for many years enabled him to deal with the cultures of the East and the West free from clichés and through different viewpoints. Season of Migration to the North is his most famous work through which he successfully reveals this perspective he gained. The definition and explanation of the views that the East and West have of each other are expressed through the concepts of orientalism and occidentalism. The concept of orientalism presented by Edward Said expresses the West's assumptions and opinions about the East. Although it is advertised as an Eastern romance, orientalism mainly includes the arguments of the West regarding both the societies of the East and the West in order to achieve its colonial goals. Occidentalism, which is a reactive concept, is a perception developed as a reaction against orientalism. In the novel, the idea of the East and the West is handled through these two contrasting concepts of orientalism and occidentalism. Although the Season of Migration to the North is not a large-volume novel, it has a rich content in terms of reflecting the historical projections of the colonial and postcolonial period. In this study, the civilizations of the East and the West, which are symbolized through characters, places and criminal events in the novel, the Season of Migration to the North, will be examined from the perspective of orientalism and occidentalism.
