Abstract:

In historical continuity of urban society, industrialization reveals its characteristic feature with architecture. Industrial buildings, which operate with factor of people and time, are undergoing a revolutionary transformation within framework of social life. Concern to protect old industrial spaces within framework of historical values has led to formation of palimpsest interior spaces. The aim of this study is to develop a new perspective for researchers in designing palimpsest spaces as exhibition spaces by refunctioning them. First, a literature review was conducted by focusing on the words "factory, functionalization, palimpsest and exhibition space" in forming the theoretical framework of the study. In the study, the necessary principles for using factory buildings as exhibition areas are explained in detail within the framework of industrial heritage and museology. In the second stage of the research, four museums in the Istanbul region were analyzed within the scope of space organization and exhibition area criteria supported by the literature. Comparisons were made within the framework of evaluation criteria in the findings, on Rahmi Koc Museum Mustafa V. Koc Building, Cendere Art Gallery, Bomontiada Ara Guler Museum, Museum Gasworks, Climate Museum and Biennial venues. The research indicates that in the transformation of historically important buildings, it has been determined that new functions added to build are successful to the extent allowed by building qualities and palimpsest traces in space can be seen.
