Abstract:

One of the regions dominated by Turks is the territory of North Africa. This domination took place during the Ottoman era in the broadest sense. The 16th-19th century Garp quarries (Algeria, Tunisia, Tripoli) and the Turkish domination of Egypt also carried Turkish culture and literature to these regions. Many poets have grown up singing Turkish poetry, especially in Algiers. These poets, who gave examples of Turkish folk poetry, mainly sang poems with the measure of syllables. These poets, known as Levent poets, poigned the Ottoman’s gaza-spirited activities in the Mediterranean. The article focuses on a reflection of Turkish poetry by Şemsi Mustafa, which was part of Algeria’s cultural landscape during Ottoman rule. Şemsi Mustafa born in the 18th century and a poet and writer who passed away at the turn of the 19th century. Şemsi Mustafa Hodja, who is a shipbuilder, shipyard instructor and captain by profession, has two small scientific Works, titled ‘‘ A Treatise on the 1775 Spanish Attack on Algeria’’, ‘‘ A Turkish Treatise on the Rights of Barud and a Table of Rights of Barud’’. The work includes transcribed text and examination of the poet’s sixteen poems. The poems are in the manuscript recorded at number 1053 of Bibliotheque Nationale de France, Department des Manuscripts, Supplement Turc. Four of the sixteen poems prepared for the publication of Şemsi Mustafa Hodja in the manuscript are in ten poems presented to the world of science by Şükrü Elçin. Twelve other poems meet the reader for the first time. In this way, the number of poems of Şemsi Mustafa Hodja reached twenty-two. The poems, which are sung with a syllable measure of 8’li, 11’li and 15’li and a murabba rhyming weave with running, are formally linked to the Turkish tradition of folk poetry these Hamasi poems are documents that will witness the struggle for dominance in the Mediterranean. The poems of Shemsi Mustafa, which make the spirit of Gaza feel, will help us to get to know the Algerian literary environment even better.
