Sultan Abdülaziz’in 30 Mayıs 1876’da bürokratik ve askerî çevrelerin işbirliğiyle tahttan indirilmesinden sonra Osmanlı tahtına V. Murâd çıkmıştır. Ancak V. Murâd’ın hüküm süresi uzun sürmemiş ve birtakım psikolojik sorunlar göstermesi üzerine üç ayın ardından zorunlu olarak tahttan indirilmiştir. Böylece tahta kardeşi II. Abdülhamid çıkmış ve Osmanlı tarihinin önemli gelişmelerini barındıran uzun bir hükümdarlık dönemini başlatmıştır. II. Abdülhamid iktidarına karşı yerel muhalefet hareketini oluşturan Jön Türkler ise kendi fikrî anlayışları çerçevesinde II. Abdülhamid’in hükümdarlığını tanımamışlardır. Özellikle muhalefet silâhı olarak etkili şekilde kullandıkları basın ve yayın üzerinden II. Abdülhamid’in padişahlığının ve halifeliğinin meşruluğunu tartışmaya açmışlardır. Bu noktada da V. Murâd’ı gündeme taşıyarak II. Abdülhamid’in Osmanlı Devleti’nin meşrû hükümdarı olamayacağını savunmuşlardır. V. Murâd ismi Jön Türkler için muhalefetlerinde II. Abdülhamid iktidarına karşı kullanılan bir simgeye dönüşmüştür. Bu çalışmada 1895-1904 yılları arasındaki Jön Türk neşriyatından hareket edilerek V. Murâd’ın tahttan indirilmesi, Çırağan Sarayı’nda yirmi sekiz yıl boyunca zorunlu ikamete tabi tutulması ve vefatı üzerinden II. Abdülhamid iktidarına karşı yapılan muhalefetin boyutları incelenmektedir. Otoritesinin geçersizliğini ispat edip II. Abdülhamid’i tahttan indirmek ve Osmanlı halkını etkileyerek destek bulmayı amaçlayan Jön Türklerin V. Murâd’ın meşruiyeti için yaptıkları ve muhalefetleri doğrultusunda gündeme getirdikleri vurgulanmaktadır.
As Sultan Abdulaziz was ousted on 30 May 1876 with the cooperation of bureaucratic and military circles, Murâd V ascended to the throne of the Ottoman Empire. However, his term of office did not last long and he was forced to abdicate after three months following some symptoms of psychological problems. Afterwards, his brother, Abdulhamid II, came to power starting a long period of rulership with many important developments in Ottoman history. On the other hand, the Young Turks, who formed the local opposition movement against the power of Abdulhamid II, did not recognize his authority suitable to their intellectual understanding. They questioned the legitimacy of the sultanate and caliphate of Abdulhamid II, especially through the press and publication which they used effectively as an opposition tool. At this point, they put Murâd V under the scope arguing that Abdulhamid II could not be the legitimate ruler of the Ottoman State. The name of Murâd V became a symbol used by the Young Turks in opposition to the power of Abdulhamid II. Reading through the Young Turk publication between 1895 and 1904, this study examine the dimensions of the opposition against the reign of Abdulhamid II, through the deposition of Murâd V, his compulsory residence of twenty-eight years in Çırağan Palace, and his death. The efforts of Young Turks to dethorne Abdulhamid II by proving the invalidity of his authority, to gain the public support and to the legitimate Murâd V are underlined.
