Abstract:

This study aims to investigate 5th grade middle school students’ reading anxiety by taking different variables into consideration. Correlational survey model which is one of the models of quantitative research method is used for the research. The sample of the research consists of 623 5th graders studying at 17 different schools located in urban and suburban districts of Adıyaman. In order to evaluate students’ reading anxieties, “Reading Anxiety Scale” developed by Çeliktürk and Yamaç (2015) is used. For analyzing the data, SPSS software is used. As the results of the analyses, it is found that students who start the school very early at the age of 60-65 months have higher level of anxiety compared to the students who start the school at the age of 66-71 months or more. When the anxiety level is analyzed according to gender variable, it is seen that males have higher anxiety level than females. As for the locations of the schools, it is found that students who live villages have higher anxiety level compared to students who live in towns and city center. Another result shows that students whose parents are well educated have less anxiety level. As for the influence of pre-school, it is found that students who attended to pre-school have less anxiety level than the students who did not. Suggestions are given by commenting on these results.
