Abstract:

The power of the Democratic Party (DP), which began with the general elections on 14 May 1950 and lasted a decade, ended with the military coup on 27 May 1960. After the first military coup, which was a significant breakthrough point in the history of the Republic of Turkey, the cunta government was established. The Cunta administration has applied propaganda tools, which are the strongest weapon to prove the legitimacy of the coup. In this direction, propaganda has been used as perception management in the economic, cultural and political field. The perception operation created in the political field, targeted the DPs. The Supreme Court of Justice was established on June 12, 1960 in order to judge the DPs after the Military Strike of May 27, 1960. In the trials in Yassya, which began on 14 October 1960, 395 parliamentarians and 592 accused were prosecuted. Among those detained in the Yassıada courts, Foreign Minister Fatin Rüştü Zorlu and Finance Minister Hasan Polatkan were executed on 16 September 1961 and Prime Minister Adnan Menderes on 17 September 1961. This article aims to communicate to the reader the administration and actions of the National Union Committee (MBK) after the May 27, 1960 military coup, as well as how the political propaganda against the DP was implemented. The article was also evaluated by addressing the period-source newspapers, magazines, brochures and books. The study also revealed the methods of legalizing the May 27, 1960 military coup and actions of a group of soldiers within the Turkish Armed Forces (TSK). This has led to the disapproval of the members of the DP and the closure of the DP.
