Abstract:

The aim of this study is to examine the relationship between emotional intelligence and leadership characteristics in a sample of trainers. While the population of the research was 4,489 trainers working in the central and provincial organizations of the General Directorate of Sports Services, the sample of the study was 604 trainers from 21 different provinces as part of the scope of the sampling method. General scanning and relational scanning models were used in the current study. The data were collected with the effect of the epidemic, mostly by online method. As for face-to-face application was carried out in Ankara and Rize provinces. A survey was used to collect data from the trainers involved in the research. The survey consists of three parts: the personal information form, the emotional intelligence characteristics scale and the leadership characteristics scale. The data of the study were analyzed using the SPSS 26.0 package program. The normality assumptions of the data were examined and it was seen that the data did not show a normal distribution. In this context, in the analysis of the data, first of all, in line with the average scores of the answers given by 604 trainers to the scales; Descriptive statistics, Spearman correlation analyze and One-Way MANOVA tests were used. The data were tested at α = 0.05 significance level. Research findings showed that it can be said that the categorical emotional intelligence levels of the trainers make a difference on their leadership characteristics. In additional, in positive/negative direction, low level significant relationships were observed between emotional intelligence traits and leadership traits. As a result, it has been observed that coaches with higher emotional intelligence levels are better at guiding the athletes to gain the necessary skills and showing leadership characteristics such as appreciating the athletes for their successful performance.
