Abstract:

Abstract:

The continuously growing human population and the destruction in nature by the industries created by human-centric, consumer-centric economic approaches threaten the future of nature by threatening the planet’s sustainability. In recent years, the dangerous effects of global warming and climate change have begun to be felt; disasters such as storms, erosion has given signs that the global climate crisis has reached an alarming dimension. The ecological crisis has increased the questioning and protection-oriented responses in literary research into the future of nature, and has improved the nature of these responses. At this point, academic studies under the title “Environmental Criticism” defend a planet-centered approach that demonstrates, defends and strengthens the right of nature, which drives man to feel a serious responsibility for nature. According to the concept of "terrestrial ethics", which was unveiled in 1949 by the American natural conservative ecologist, educator and natural writer Aldo Leopold, one of the most influential thinkers of the twentieth century, man is re-defined as a simple member, completely different from human-centric orientations, like the other layers of the "terrestrial pyramid". The purpose of this article is to evaluate the story of Sadri Ertem (1898-1943), known for his stories and novels focused on social problems in the 20th century in the history of the new Turkish literature, with an environmental perspective in the context of land ethics and to reveal the ecological functional dimension of the story in question. The disrupted land image, which is exposed to intense destruction due to human and capital-centric concerns, will be open to discussion in the light of the ethical approach on the impact of the land on the vital function and relations between the other elements of the ecosystem.

Abstract:

The destruction of nature caused by an ever-increasing human population and the industries produced by human-centered, consumption-oriented economical approaches threaten the future of nature by damaging the sustainability of the planet. In recent years, the dangerous effects of global warming and climate change have begun to be felt; disasters such as floods and erosions have signaled that the global climate crisis has reached alarming proportions. The ecological crisis has increased the responses focused on questioning and protecting the future of nature in literary studies while at the same time improving the quality of these reactions. At this point, academic studies conducted under the heading of "ecocriticism" advocate a planet-centered approach that reveals, defends and reinforces the right to nature, and pushes people to take serious responsibility towards nature. According to the concept of "land ethic" introduced in 1949 by the American conservationist ecologist, educator and naturalist Aldo Leopold, who is one of the most influential thinkers of the twentieth century, human beings are completely different from anthropocentric orientations, redefined by Leopold as a simple member like the other layers of the "land pyramid. The aim of this article is to evaluate Bacayı İndir Bacayı Kaldır (1933) –a short story by Sadri Ertem (1898-1943), known for his stories and novels focusing on social problems in the twentieth century in the history of new Turkish literature, with an environmentalist perspective in the context of land ethic and to reveal its ecological functional dimension. In the story, the image of the land that has been subjected to intense destruction due to human and capital-centered concerns and consequently lost its vital functions and relations with with other elements of the ecosystem will be discussed in the light of the ethical approach in question.
