Abstract:

In our society, it is common to believe that the participation of children, especially in school age, in sports activities has a negative impact on their academic achievements. This blood causes individuals in the beginning and developmental age to be restricted by their guardians to participate in such activities. This study was aimed at investigating the impact of middle school students’ participation in sports activities on academic achievements and level of communication skills. This aim was included in the 2018-2019 academic year, a total of 415 volunteers, consisting of 10th and 11th class students who continue their studies in six different high schools in the province of Maltepe in Istanbul. The "Communication Skills Inventory" was applied to the participants to determine the level of communication skills along with demographic questions and the scale of participation in sports activities developed by researchers. In addition to all of this, the arithmetic average of the students' academic achievements, through the e-School system, to the class levels of the students, was taken in order to evaluate their academic achievements. The data received was transmitted to the information medium. The analysis of these data used t-test and anavo tests in the SPSS 22 package program. The average academic score of the participants was found to be significantly different by gender and school type at the level p=0,000. In addition, according to the levels of participation in sports activities within the school, including the sporting situation of the participants outside the school, the academic ratings were not significantly different (p<0,05) On the other hand, if you need to do sports outside the school time, participating in any sports activity with the school teams has increased the level of communication skills. At this point it turned out that only school teams and participating in the Turkish championship did not make a meaningful difference (p<0,05) on communication skills. Based on the findings of the study, it can be concluded that gender is an influential factor on the academic success of the school type, and that participation in sports activities at different times and levels can not negatively affect academic success. Another result is that participating in sports activities can affect communication skills in general.
