Abstract:

In the years of the Cold War, in the beginnings of 1960’s, the period in which CCCP attempted to situate a misile system to the Cuba that was similar to the rockets called Jupiter, which were situated in Turkey by the USA led to an international crisis in a short period of time. The military strategic show of strenght of the two super powers, the USA and CCCP’s brought the World and the countries these missiles were situated to the threshold of a nuclear war. The Cuban crisis which began in the spring of 1962, ended with an agreement after the move of the USA to dismantle the Jupiter rockets from Turkey and renouncing of CCCP to situate similar weapons to Cuba. However, the Turkish press continued to discuss this matter in different dimensions. Accordingly, the aim of this study is to evaluate the Cuban crisis which emerged after the USA’s military strategic plan implemented by the ‘allied country’ Turkey within the framework of USA’s enclosure policy and the response of CCCP in Cuba with the different interpretations from the Turkish press. The article also attempts to analyze to what extent the Cuban crisis affected the Turkish public opinion the discussions of the USA-oriented international policy making processes which began with the Korean war and the membership of NATO
