Abstract:

The aim of this study is to present detailed theoretical knowledge about the subjects of vocabulary, word knowledge and vocabulary teaching which are related to word itself as a nation that is building block of the language and the basis of language skills in language education and teaching, and to make various suggestions about the points to take into consideration and to be done in vocabulary teaching activities while teaching foreign language. In this direction, a broad literature search was carried out and the knowledge obtained from this research has been transformed to suggestions which may be useful for vocabulary teaching in the foreign language teaching process, as taking researcher’s own experiences in education. This study contains knowledge associated with vocabulary, receptive and productive vocabulary, word knowledge and its dimensions, the purpose of vocabulary teaching, direct and indirect vocabulary teaching methods and the advantages and limitations of these methods, points that one needs to be aware of during vocabulary teaching and strategies and steps that can be used and followed by teachers as explaining the meaning dimensions of a word in foreign language teaching. It is believed that these theoretical knowledge and suggestions provided here will be useful to both researchers and language teachers.
