Abstract:

There exist some issues related to the teaching and learning of Turkish in the Turkish language centers. The aim of this study is to identify the problems with learning Turkish at Yunus Emre Institute in Jordan in the light of the perceptions of those learning Turkish as a foreign language. Many studies have been conducted on the problems in teaching Turkish as a foreign language. The originality of this work is to identify the problems faced by those who have the same native language (Arabic). This study involves qualitative research and content analysis is used in the analysis of data obtained in the research. Collection and analysis of data was based on the following question asked to the learners at level B1 in Yunus Emre Institute in Jordan : “What kind of learning difficulties have you had while learning Turkish?” and an interview form which the participants completed on age, gender and profession on a voluntarily basis. At the end of this study, it was determined that students have problems in many aspects. . It is possible to rank the most significant problems such as the alphabet difference, problems encountered in pronunciation or speaking skills. In addition, it is observed that students face many problems stemming from grammar and as a result they have difficulty in understanding grammar rules. It is suggested that students develop their audio-based skills like listening and speaking and instructors focus on Arabic culture and student-centred activities.
