Based on ‘analogy’ and “inquiry-based learning approach”, the present study involves the application of a guide material developed for the unit on ‘matter and change’ in science and technology course, and taking student opinions concerning the application. The material designed for the study consists of three different topics for two different learning levels, i.e. primary school 6th and 7th grades. The material was developed on the basis of inquiry-based learning approach. Moreover the analogy technique was also employed at different stages of inquiry-based learning. The material was applied to the students of a primary school in Kütahya province during the academic year 2008–2009. The applications for the 6th grade included 18 students, while 7thgrade applications involved 21 students. In order to develop insight into the effectiveness of the guide material used, semi-structured interviews were held with 9 students randomly selected from both education levels. The data obtained as a result of the interviews showed that the students liked to carry out the experiments and activities in the material; they thought that the activities were fun and thus, their participation in the class was increased. Moreover, the students also stated that the guide material helped them associate the units in science and technology with daily life in different ways, and it particularly increased curiosity and interest towards the course and made learning easier, ideas that are in favor of similar applications. In the light of these results, it could be suggested to employ analogy and inquiry-based learning to a greater extent in curricula.
