Despite the fact that texts have played a key role in commercial translation research and training, the translation context is also a crucial element. The communicative context (a core element in Functional approaches to Translation), the professional context (fundamental in situational approaches), and finally the academic context, which is in line with the educational paradigms of the Bologna process and the need for student-centered approaches, emphasize the importance of educational and professional context-bound variables. Concerned by the need to respond to the role of universities in providing global training for individuals in society and the labor market, this paper will explore the scope of functionalist and situational approaches for the promotion of graduates’ employability, and the diversification and reconceptualization of translation nowadays. This will translate into a dynamic model focusing on elements beyond the text itself. We will target commercial translation as a translation variety where transversal and specific elements of translation practice are brought together, favoring a learning environment that promotes translation transversality (Calvo, 2010).
