The purpose of this research is to study the knowledge and communication skills of the teacher candidates. The research has used a screening model. The data of the study was collected from teachers candidates who studied at all levels of class and social information at the Faculty of Education of the Nine-May University in the 2019-2020 educational-learning period. As a data collection tool developed by Tondeur and others (2017) and adapted to Turkish by Alkan and Emmioğlu Sarıkaya (2018) has been used the "Information and Communication Technologies Qualifications (BIT) Scale for Teacher Candidates". In data analysis, t-test and one-way variance analysis (ANOVA) techniques have been used for frequency, percentage, arithmetic average and intergroup comparisons. The results of the analysis have found that the teacher candidates have the "high level" in the overall scale, the "high level" in the under-dimensional support for the use of Information and Communication Technologies, and the "mediate level" in the under-dimensional qualification in the teaching design of Information and Communication Technologies. However, the department has concluded that computer ownership, daily Internet use time variables do not affect the knowledge and communication technology skills of the teacher candidates. Finally, the gender variable in Information and Communication Technologies Use supports male teachers candidates in the lower dimension; the class level variable in the total scale and the lower dimensions in 4. In favour of class teachers candidates; there have been significant differences in the participation in seminars or courses for information and communication technologies in the overall scale and in the lower scale of Information and Communication Technologies Use Support in favour of the teachers candidates who attend seminars or courses. Considering that the sample group of the study consists of class and social information teachers candidates, research conducted with more different sample groups on similar topics may be recommended. It is also possible to increase the number of seminars or courses conducted in order to improve the skills of the information and communication technologies of the teacher candidates at the bachelor’s level, based on the research results.
The aim of this study was to determine preservice teachers’ information and communication technologies (ICT) competence. A survey model was used. The sample consisted of 310 students of the department of the classroom and social studies teaching of the faculty of education of Ondokuz Mayıs University in the 2019-2020 academic year. Data were collected using the Information and Communication Technology Competencies Scale for Preservice Teachers (ICTC-PT) developed by Tondeur et al. (2017) and adapted to Turkish language by Alkan and Emmioğlu Sarıkaya (2018). Data were analyzed using frequency, percentage, arithmetic mean, and t-test and one-way variance analysis (ANOVA) for between-group comparisons. Participants had a high ICTC-PT total score and “Competencies to support pupils for ICT-use in class” (CSP-ICT) subscale score whereas they had a moderate “Competencies to use ICT for Instructional Design” (ICT-ID) subscale score. Their scores did not significantly differ by major, computer ownership, and daily Internet usage time. Male participants had significantly higher CSP-ICT scores than females. Fourth graders had significantly higher CSP-ICT scores than other graders. Those who had attended seminars or courses on ICT had higher ICTC-PT and CSP-ICT scores than those who had not. The study sample consisted only of students of classroom and social studies teaching, and therefore, future studies should focus on different sample groups. It is recommended that undergraduate students of teaching departments be offered more seminars or course programs to help them develop ICT competencies.
